The command console is faster and easier to use than files system browsers and other graphical tools for most routine file management tasks. The console utilizes an optimal balance of keyboard and mouse usage. Commands can be entered into the command console much faster than wading though browser windows with a mouse.
People who use computers much of the day often experience wrist strain from overuse of the mouse. It is hard not to feel discomfort after gripping a mouse and clicking the left button for several hours. The console and text editor incorporate ergonomic design considerations to allevaite wrist strain.
It takes only a few keystrokes or mouse clicks to enter most commands. Combination keys (e.g. shifted or control keys) are also avoided; as they induce excessive wrist strain. When using the tools there is generally more hand movement; which reduces repetative motions. The mouse hand tends to move back and forth between the keyboard; allowing it to realx.
The command console avoids the clumsyness of traditional consoles, such as the Dos console or Unix command shells. Most commands are just a few characters long. Even fewer keys are used due to a simple yet sophisticated command recall and editing facility. Keyboard usage involves more hand motion, but most command driven interfaces require an excessive amount of typing. Mouse operations are also used so that the console is not entirely keyboard centric.
The commands intrinsic to the console are easy to learn. New users can bring up menus to get started. An extensive context-sensitive help system is also provided. An experienced programmer or system administrator should be productive in a matter of minutes.
The text editor uses the same ergonomic look-and-feel as the command console. The commands to search the file system and scan text files for keywords allow the editor to be launched when a match is found. However, the choice of a text editor is largely a subjective choice. The command console will work fine with whatever text editor you are familiar with or prefer.
